Head to Yellowstone National Park in the summer and to the National Elk Refuge near Jackson, Wyoming in the winter. The Yellowstone herd is very large (somewhere around 200,000 animals) and spends the summer distributed throughout the Park and migrates to the National Elk Refuge for the winter. We saw elk many times when hiking and driving in Yellowstone. The closest we got was outside the visitor center at Mammoth Hot Springs.
