 Wawona Road to Mariposa Grove

The first stopping place along the Wawona Road as you leave from the Valley is Tunnel View. This is an incredible viewpoint looking east into Yosemite Valley. Make sure you have your camera.

If you take the road all the way to Wawona you will find a range of amenity. There is a Visitor Center, Pioneer History Center, shop, post office, an art studio that runs workshops and the start to several trails. The Pioneer History Center offers a horse drawn coach ride and a blacksmith demonstration. The Wawona Meadow Loop is a nice easy 3.5 mile loop walk which is great for looking at wild flowers in early summer and is popular with butterflies. The main draw at Wawona is however the giant sequoias.

Giant Sequoia Tree

This group of giant sequoia trees is (rightly) a very popular destination. If you are there at a busy time take the free shuttle bus from Wawona Store as parking is limited. You can walk for 1.6 to 6.9 miles through the Grove depending on how long you want to spend there and what you want to see. The Grizzly Giant is the largest tree with a circumference of 96ft and the California Tunnel Tree has a hole bored all the way through it to allow Victorian tourists to drive through. There are Ranger led walk in the Grove as well as a museum to provide information. If you want to avoid the crowds the best time to visit the Grove is first thing in the morning or in the evening before sunset.

If you have had enough of walking you can also get a tram tour around the Grove with audio commentary.
