Chicago Art Institute and other Art and Museums

Public art. Chicago

Top of my museums and galleries list in Chicago is the amazing Art Institute of Chicago.  I particularly love the American Collection which is home to Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks among with lots of other fabulous work.

As well as the Chicago Art Institute, there is also a lot of public sculpture in Chicago. Highlights for me are the massive Picasso in Daley Plaza, Miro’s Miss Chicago which is very handily right nearby and Kapoor’s stupendous Cloud Gate in Millennium Park. The City Of Chicago links to a detailed guide to Chicago Public Art in the Loop. If you want a more digestible version, Trip Advisor has a walking tour of the highlights.

If you are after some non-art based museums, there is a museum campus at Near South Side. The Field Museum of Natural History, the Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium are all based here. All of these are good places to hang out if the weather is inclement. The Field Museum has a good dinosaur exhibit if your party includes a budding palaeontologist.
