National Parks – 5 to 12 Year Olds

Watchful ‘gator, Everglades National Park

There are various activities in all the Parks aimed at primary school age children. The Junior Ranger Program varies from Park to Park but is either free or a nominal sum to obtain an activity book that helps children engage with the Park through offering certificates, badges, stickers etc for completing activities. There are also Ranger led activities provided for this age group such as campfire stories, bug hunts etc. For more information about the Program in the Park you are visiting go to the NPS website for your Park. You can often download and print the activity book in advance but not all Parks have this facility. The is also a web ranger program aimed at this age group which may be a good way of provoking interest ahead of your visit.

In addition to the Junior Ranger Program, depending on the Park and the time of year, there may be opportunities for walking, hiking, swimming, canoeing / kayaking, horse riding, quiet water rafting or raft floats, cycling and skiing, along with wildlife spotting and picnicking.
