National Parks – Babies and Toddlers

Steamy interpretive trail at Yellowstone National Park

All the Parks have a range of short, step free trails that are suitable for buggies / prams as they are wheelchair accessible. They are often interpretive trails, designed to showcase some of the ecology or geography of the Park with various informational exhibits. In addition to these, there will often be longer, fairly level trails that may have a few steps or a steep section but are manageable with a buggy. If you are in doubt whether a trail is suitable, ask one of the Rangers who will be happy to advise. It is worth noting, the common American term for buggy is ‘stroller’ as this could save a lot of conversational confusion.

Reins can be very useful in some of the Parks, especially the Everglades and Yellowstone where there are extensive boardwalk trails. These are ideal for toddlers and they are fenced, but with fences toddlers could get through and alligators or boiling water the other side respectively!

Toddler friendly activities in the parks include pleasant picnic spots with benches and tables, wildlife spotting, paddling, walking and cycling (in a seat or toddler bike trailer).
