Getting to Boston

All domestic and international flights land at Boston Logan Airport.  The airport is served by the MBTA Silver Line (which is an express bus) and is about 20-30 minutes from downtown Boston.  The service is pretty regular so you shouldn’t have to wait too long (although bear in mind it may be busy), but you will have to get from the drop off point to your accommodation.  You can see the timetables and drop off points here http://www.mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/subway/lines/?route=SILVER

If you’re travelling with younger children consider getting a taxi to your accommodation, the prices vary but you can expect to pay between $20-35 each way, depending on traffic.  It’s not cheap as the journey from Logan is a pretty quick one but it obviously gets you door to door with minimum hassle so if you’ve had a long flight it might be worth it.

British Airways offer direct flights from the UK to Boston up to 28 times per week so you’re sure to find a flight time that suits you.  You can be in Boston in around 7 hours from Heathrow.

Virgin Atlantic also operate direct flights from the UK to Boston.   We love them for the great on board entertainment systems and family friendly approach.

If neither of these options appeal we like Skyscanner for a good listing of all the operators  running flights.

Getting around Boston

As I’ve mentioned, it’s really easy to walk around Boston.  The main sights are all fairly close together.  You can pick up maps from any of the large hotels and most visitors like to cover the Freedom Trail which is essentially a walking tour of all the historic sights associated with the American Revolution.  Alternatively you can print walking maps of Boston here http://www.bostonbyfoot.org/maps/street

If you need to get public transport then the T is the main source of transportation in Boston.  It’s essentially the equivalent of our underground system.  You’ll need either a Charliecard or Charlieticket which can be bought from the subway and train stations.  More information can be found on the MBTA website http://www.mbta.com/fares_and_passes/subway/
