Planning ahead

Although I try to bring some spontaneity into my life wherever possible (virtually impossible with two young children), a transatlantic flight is not the time to throw caution and planning to the wind.  When flying with kids, it pays to plan!  Dull, but deadly effective!

Packing

There’s a link to a packing checklist here but try to avoid packing your hand luggage for every eventuality.  Believe me, I’ve done it!  I didn’t need half the stuff I took, I had to lug it around from A to B and it made it harder to find the things I needed…Where’s the damn passports…Anyone????  Yes, you will probably need more than just money, tickets and passport but 3 full changes of clothes, 20 nappies and 3 packs of wipes is a bit excessive by anyone’s standards.

What is useful is to pack things into large ziplock bags.  For example, a change of clothes or pyjamas, then if there is any spillages or other accidents the wet items can be packed away safely without getting everything else wet.

On the subject of hand luggage, fortunately nappy bags are classed as a separate bag allowance usually so you don’t have to cram everything in your handbag, however it can be easier to carry just one bag containing everything.  I’ve found it useful to pack my main nappy bag into my hold luggage and instead carry a smallish bag that just fits in nappies, wipes etc. It’s a challenge changing a nappy in an aeroplane toilet at the best of times (especially if you are dealing with a toddler!) without having to cope with a large bulky nappy bag.  The first bag I used for such purpose was a really large freebie wash bag given away with a magazine but Anorak do some great bags which are the right size and come in some really funky designs.  If you prefer something a bit more floral and girly then try Etsy for some alternatives.

Bear in mind that it’s easy to find nappies, formula, wipes and anything else you will need once you are there so it’s only really worth packing enough for the first day or two.
