California coast

Autumn is a great time to visit the California coast, temperatures are often higher than in the summer and there is less of the famous fog.  Why not visit bohemian San Francisco, visit Alcatraz, see the Golden Gate bridge, marvel at Lombard Street and check out the street food scene in the Mission area.  Alternatively hit the road with a trip through Big Sur, taking in the dramatic coastline and local hikes.

Go independent…

British Airways offer direct flights from the UK to San Francisco twice daily and are consistently one of our favourites. BA also do a range of holidays to San Fran.

Virgin Atlantic also operate direct flights from the UK to San Francisco.   We love them for the great on board entertainment systems and family friendly approach.

If neither of these options appeal we like Skyscanner for a good listing of all the operators  running flights.

Book a package…

Sometimes you just don’t have the time or inclination to plan and book a trip independently, that’s when booking through a tour operator makes sense.

Kuoni have a range of holiday options covering both San Francisco and the Californian coast including their Classic California tour which takes you on a road trip down the stunning coastline from San Francisco to San Diego. Alternatively they have a tour covering Northern California which enables you to visit the wine regions of Napa and Sonoma and then work off any excess with a trip to Lake Tahoe.

When you’re travelling on your own, it can be a tempting option to use a tour operator or opt for group travel, but single supplements can really push up the price of a trip and sometimes you want to share the experience with others. If you can’t persuade anyone to do your dream trip with you, then Just You provides a great option for those who don’t want to go it alone, specialising in solo travel. Their America’s Golden West tour is a 12 day trip taking in the coastal route from San Francisco to Los Angeles before heading inland to Las Vegas.
